Meadowrig livestock consists of a prize-winning herd of pedigree limousin cattle and a flock of cross texel/suffolk sheep which are both farmed at Stuartslaw and Whitedamhead in Berwickshire. Our limousin herd started in 2009 with the birth of embryo calves from one of our foundation cows Woodhouse Sara. Subsequently more females were introduced when the Newmeadows Herd was incorporated in to Meadowrig during 2011. Further purchases from leading herds including Brockhurst, Ironstone, Lodge, Haltcliffe and Sarkley along with heifers imported from leading French herds including Broussaud, Champeval, Souton Germain and Chatelus helped increase numbers of top quality females. The purchase of our first stock bull "Festival" from the prized Champeval herd in France will hopefully bolster our strategy of trying to breed naturally well-muscled animals with good female traits and excellent conformation.
Our herd is a member of the SAC herd health scheme and we test for Johnes, BVD and IBR whilst also vaccinating for BVD and IBR. We have tested clear for Johnes disease since 2009 and we are working towards our accreditation which is taking longer due to the fact that 2011 was the first year we have had animals aged over 2 years old. We are very clear about the need to maintain the highest standards regarding the herd's health and support measures put in place to ensure that our customers can purchase our animals with peace of mind.
Our flock of around 300 breeding ewes is run on around 100 acres of good quality grazing at Whitedamhead. While the majority of the ewes are texel cross, we introduced around 150 suffolk cross gimmers which are producing very good lambs when bred to the texel. Our lambs are sold through a variety of centres both locally and nationally and combined with our Scottish Farm Assured status our lambs often attract some of the highest prices at market.
Both the cattle and sheep are looked after by Mr Ross Drummond who keeps a close eye on all matters relating to the herd and flock. Ross is helped by Natalie Cormack and both take a keen interest in showing the limousins at local, regional and national shows.
Visitors are welcome to Meadowrig and we look forward to hearing from you should you be interested in making an appointment.
